Book excerpt
Cherri deeply regretted allowing Erica to talk her into coming here, even if it was the hottest new nightclub in the city. This place gave her the creeps. Nothing she could put into words, exactly; she was just uncomfortable with the dark, hungry atmosphere that hung over the room. She had observed the way the patrons danced, rubbing their bodies against one another mimicking the intimacy of sex, often drifting off together into the small rooms located just off the dance floor. Since arriving an hour ago, she had been hit on repeatedly, by both genders. When Erica returned, they would leave this meat market and go somewhere fun.
A coffee house with a jazz or classic rock band was more her style. Cherri liked good conversation and music that didn’t make your ears feel like they were bleeding. She liked spending time with her best friend Erica, when she was in town. Hooking up with strangers had never interested her even when she was single, so why go to places like this. She didn’t judge anyone who chose that kind of lifestyle; it just wasn’t her idea of fun. She knew that Erica, being single, liked going places where she could meet eligible men, but this place was a little over the top even for her.
A tall and very attractive man suddenly materialized no more than two feet in front of her. “May I get you another glass of wine?” His voice was sultry, with an accent Cherri could not readily identify.
Startled, she jumped, nearly dropping her empty glass. His hand shot out to steady hers, and a shiver of edgy anticipation raced through her. A natural female reaction, she rationalized. Women are always turned on by bad boys, and this one, Cherri’s instincts told her, was dark and spicy bad. She had every intention to decline his offer, but when her eyes met his, all Cherri could think about were his eyes. They were dark, beautiful, and so compelling. Cherri forgot that she had wanted to leave, and the fact that she had a husband and two teenage daughters became a vague memory. There was only this moment and this man. The music that had been unbearably loud now faded into the background. She longed to follow him anywhere, grant him all that he desired.
“Perhaps you would like to dance instead,” he suggested, taking the glass from her unresistant fingers and setting it safely on the bar. His words filled her head, as clear and familiar as her own thoughts.
Cherri allowed him to take possession of her hand and lead her onto the dance floor. He held her close as they danced. She felt the heat of his body through his fine linen shirt; his heart beat under her hand, which rested palm down against his chest. He smelled of sandalwood, wood smoke, and fresh air. A warm and foggy sensation came over her mind and body. All thoughts of her responsibilities to marriage and family receded to the edges of her mind.
