Book excerpt
Willie sulked. With his shoulders slumped and guns in hand, he chugged the rest of his beer and tossed the bottle aside. He slowly waddled onto the platform, taking a moment to climb up, stood in front of the chair, the throne of wires, their time machine, and sat down. “Gentlemen.” General Denver addressed Chad and Willie. “The mission you are about to embark on shoulders the fate of humanity. Whether we rise above the obstacles before us or sink into the mud as we are pushed to the brink of extinction, rests entirely on you. You two are regular human beings who are about to face off against terrors that haven’t been imagined since we were children. These foreign invaders have been around longer than any of us, and it is because of this that they expect the human race to fold without much of a fuss. They don’t expect us to put up much of a fight. But I assure you that if we are to die, then we will die on our feet, our hands in motion.” General Denver held his hands out to them. “Right now, you two are the left and right hand of humanity. And you are no doubt the greatest men that I have ever met.” The General saluted them. Following his lead, the other soldiers saluted them as well. It was the general’s serious tone that caused reality to finally set in for Willie. By the time he realized it, they’d strapped him into the chair. He could feel them put on the metal crown, constricting the circulation around his head. This might just be the end for him. Despite their expectations, Willie couldn’t help but feel like he would die here. He should’ve seen his life flash before his eyes. Why wasn’t he? Were there any regrets? Anything he could’ve done better? Had he lived a good life? Not really. This was the conclusion he came to after forty-five years spent expelling stale air out of his burning lungs. What the hell was taking them so long with the electricity? What’s more, what were they doing with Chad? Willie watched how he draped himself in a blanket of wires while Willie had to sit here like a serial killer. How was that fair? “Are you ready, Chad?” an armed guard called to him. Chad stood brave and tall and barrel-chested. “I’m always ready.” “Alright then.” The armed guard aimed his rifle and shot Chad right through the chest. Willie watched on in horror. “Fuck!” “Now!” They flipped the switch, sending tens of thousands of volts of electricity through Willie in an instant. He could smell something burning. It took him a moment to realize that what was burning was him. However, the single moment it took to get there had been interrupted by constant spasms, permitting only minor lapses for thoughts. In his fading vision, Willie couldn’t even process that he was dying. Before his eyeballs popped out, he saw a bright blue light and could feel himself climbing.
