Author Bio
Matthew D. Smith was born in California, one of seven children. He called many places home before finding the one place he would claim as his own. He has swum the warm Caribbean seas, slept in teeming jungles, scaled high granite mountains, and marveled in the shadow of ancient forests. A master of machines, schooled in engineering, and trained in the military; he has seen and done much. But, of all he is; he is first and foremost a man who has truly loved, and dedicated his living to the service of one other, his wife.
Description
Finding true love changes everything; but sometimes, it is found to prepare you for when everything changes. On the alpine shoulders of Lone Peak, high above the steep slopes of his beloved canyon, Morgan James stood alone…..terrified and desperate. It was all on him now; the lives of his family, of Andalynn, his newfound love. Tomorrow the darkness would fall, and only he was aware of it. The terrible UNION was upon them, and with it, the end of the world he knew. His familiar predictable life: High School, his job in the canyon, the next track meet; they were no longer of consequence. Driven by love, the path of fate was now set, to venture into the fog of uncertainty, and face the perils of an infant world; a world in which he was of unimaginable significance. Survival now lay somewhere across hundreds of miles of amalgamated lands pieced together from the remnants of two worlds, ours and theirs. Hunted by monstrous beasts and vile enemies, there seemed little hope. Could he stand against the rising tides of darkness? Could he be the one to shoulder the crushing weight of destiny? If only for her, he had to be.
Book excerpt
Prologue “Hopeless! All will come to ruin at the failings of this unknowing…unperceiving boy.” Fin’s long tail slapped the ground with a loud crack followed by an exasperated snort. His illuminated white horns faded, and his fiery eyes darkened revealing their golden hues and the burden of gnawing doubt. “Rest yourself, Fin, it is not his fault. The boy’s mind has never been opened beyond the small reality before him; we are like stars shining beside the sun,” Aelvi’s aged voice responded without breaking from his concentrated focus. His upward curved horns blazed with white flames, and like thin shades concealing the brightness of day, his closed eyelids veiled a powerful inner brilliance. The long bleached hairs under his chin and velvety fur of his face danced in the twisting wind emanating from within his weathered figure. “Is that supposed to grant me some sense of easiness? Darkness looms over us, inescapably, and you ask me to rest?” Fin said shaking his large head with jaw clenched. “Calm yourself, we are getting closer. The eyes of his soul are waking up and we will soon be able to guide him to the cave and the protection of the mountain. Do not let doubt fill your mind……find your faith in him. There is more to this unknowing boy than you can see.” The side of the old Dyers mouth creased with a confident smile. “His light may well be our brightest hope in the uncertain world that awaits.”
