Book excerpt

Leaves were falling outside and the wind billowed through the tall maples in the small town of Somberville, Oregon. One leaf in particular caught Adam’s eye. It was a bight red leaf that seemed to take on a life of its own. It strangely went against the wind, and lingered in the air before landing on the back of a man standing next to one of the tall maples. Adam hadn’t noticed the man standing there until now. The man had his back to the school classroom as if he was looking at something. Adam strained to get a better look at him, but couldn’t. He felt as if he had seen this man before but didn’t know exactly where. The man wore an old, tattered waste-high black velvet jacket with a ripped pocket on the right side. Adam slowly walked over to the window to get a better look at the somewhat familiar figure. As he walked, the man seemed to move further away, although he never took a step. Adam’s head began to hurt. It started slowly from the back of his head, then migrated to just between his eyes. Eventually he reached the window and pressed his nose slightly against it and held his breath to prevent fogging up his view. He tapped on the window, and the man slowly began to turn his head.
