Description
Something is wrong in Shane’s neighborhood. As he unravels the mystery behind the animal disappearances–that have occurred over several decades–the signs lead him to the listless Old Man Fischer. One night, he and his mother visit the elderly man who then tell them a tale about his childhood and post-doctoral life at the university.
As he shares his life, he describes the opportunity to be on a spectacular new project in Central America. Along with his new wife, their objective is to catalogue new species in the canopies of the Costa Rican rainforest. However, the eruption of Mount Arenal shakes the country. Upon the demands of the university, Dr. Fischer must take Jillian and his team to explore a new region unearthed from the explosion. As wonder easily overwhelms him and the team, tragedy strikes quickly and leaves his wife in a catatonic state.
Over the next few days as more animals are disappearing, Shane laments over the man’s life in the rainforest and questions the event at the volcano. What are you hiding, Old Man Fischer? He finally asks himself. Shane knows the answers lie in the man’s house and brings his best friend for backup. In a roller coaster of an ending, Shane will discover Old Man Fischer’s secrets and uncover the mystery in his neighborhood after all these years…
Book excerpt
Sitting in the darken room, he heard the faint click of the large grandfather’s clock in the hallway. The faint sound echoed in the silent shadows just outside of his study. No matter, he reviewed the document before him on the desk. It had been placed gingerly and carefully upon the already stack of paperwork and books. No, this document was important for him. No longer did the desk lamp work, only to rely on the far lamp near the window for any brightness.
He read the words out loud carefully and slowly as if he had been lecturing to a small group of students, “Under the hot Central American rain forest canopies of the large indigenous plant life, I had remained still and quiet although my body had been penetrated by the day’s humid conditions. I had waited for the prized species which has not yet been documented in this lifetime, in which this region has only been investigated the various subsets of creatures. My resilience for patience had mounted to this moment.” After so many times, the memorization of the words had embedded within his tone. While his eyesight had been gradually worsened, the words were as fresh he had written the first time. “My resilience for patience had mounted to this moment.”
Out of the corner of his eye, he had seen some movement in the corner. Nothing out of the ordinary.
The strong wind outside knocked at the windows behind the long faded yellow curtains. The darkness of night had further pushed what little light could be attained. He had picked those curtains for her when they moved to the house. Yet in this light, just beyond his vision, he could see the small shadows of movement on the floor that moved quickly and silently in the far reaching shadows.
Casually he looked away from the article, catching the faintness of dust and mildew in his nostrils. How long has it been since he had dusted this area? How long had he dared to care for the house that he had long ago lavishly created for her? Then again, he not thought how long ago he had bathed, catching a scent of must from his body as he shifted in the chair. He was getting away from daily procedures of life.
The coolness of autumn had crept into the house to make the room feel cooler than it had intended. With one hand, he drew his sweater closer to his body, trying to huddle his large, long frame closer to the desk. He dared not to turn the heat up sooner than necessary. The environment of the house would be off; He would lose valuable time. He made the sacrifice necessary to keep the temperature at a proper level. Sometimes, it had been necessary in his life to devoid of normal customs of everyday life in order to continue his research.
For the final result.
