Poor Thing

by Mark A Sullivan

Poor thing,
Grandmother always called the single girl.
Sympathy felt
For stubborn dreams
Of shared affection
With distance kept apart,

Then too soon left
To mire,
In private shadowed corners,
Grandmother knew,
Of quiet resignation.
