Sestina Challenge!
« on: March 28, 2009, 03:35:13 PM »
I'd like to see the best sestina you can write. I'll publish the best in the up coming issue of Enounce.

From our old boards, here is the winner our of our last challenge:

The world will someday get to choose
If you've been bad or you've been nice
It never calls us just to play
It doesn't always wish us well
Exposed by our own thoughts and words
Enslaved within our flesh and matter

But should it even really matter?
Do people ever get to choose?
We parse and pick apart our words
Convice ourselves that we've been nice
So certain that we're doing well
Made insane by how we play

Remember how we used to play?
When evening curfews didn't matter?
We're falling down the deepest well
Afraid to speak our minds or choose
Ashamed to be described as nice
A fool who speaks in simple words

But all we truly have are words
Naked in these games we play
Our bitter hate portrayed as nice
Falsehood quick becomes our matter
Careless with the words we choose
Defining downwards living well

And at the bottom of our well
Our dankest, darkest, soul-sick words
The accusations there to choose
With strategies so quick to play
Our consequences little matter
Ashamed for being thought as "nice"

For we hate the ones we say are nice
And we envy those who do so well
We're quick to say it doesn't matter
So fast we are, our sickly words
These moonlight games we seek to play
Afflicted by the words we choose

Choose nice, said the author
Play well, he added
Words matter he implored, but nobody listened, and so he just moved on to other business...

It was submitted by JPD, a good friend of EWR.

Don't know what the status of this challenge is, but I have written a sestina, "We Decided to Move Inland" for NaPoWriMo on my blog at Yips and Howls --

It's nice, very picturesque.
