Inspiration for Writers 11 Cool Sites

Posted on November 25, 2012May 29, 2017 by Richard

The following is a list of 11 writing sites that will bring you inspiration in your writing. They are prompt sites, or sites with exercises, or just very cool stuff to play with.

These 11 are part of our 102 Best Sites for Writers List. When it’s all finished you’ll see all 102 sites, plus we’ll let you know when it’s all done. For now enjoy these fun, cool, inspirational sites for writers.  (yes the numbers start at 11. because we already have the first 10 of our 102 list, click here for those).

11. Fake Name Generator http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/

Fake Name Generator does a lot more than generate fake names, it generates fake lives. If you can’t come up with a character for your story or novel, stop here and try it. I played on this site for about an hour just coming of with fake people. There are a ton of fake generators on the web, but I’m pretty sure this is the only one that generates Mother’s Maiden Name, Visa number, DOB, address, job, phone number, email and more. It is really cool. You can even pick the countries and the place of birth and it will change the names to match. For instance an American living in Mexico will have a name that matches both regions. It’s really wild, try it.

12. Story Bird http://storybird.com/storymaker/?storefront_slug=pascalcampion

Story Bird’s story maker is different in that the rest of the sites on this list. It lets you use pictures to create your stories. It is very cool, fill with cool animation and interactivity. It is an awesome piece of tech, and very fun for writers!

13. First 50 Words http://first50.wordpress.com/

This is a prompt site that gives you a writing topic to start on. They give the topic, you write the first 50 words of a story on the site “in the comments.” It’s a great way to gain inspiration and many of the topics are unique and interesting, they are sure to get the creativity flowing.

14. Easy Street Prompts http://www.easystreetprompts.com/

Much like First 50 Words, Easy Street Prompts gives you a prompt, many times a picture and some background to write on. The very cool thing about this site is that it looks great. It a very clean and well done place for writers. Their prompts are also unique and the back stories are awesome. It’s a good place to go if you need a prompt start.

15.Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest http://www.bulwer-lytton.com/index.html

Here is a fiction contest that challenges you to write the WORST first sentence of the WORST novel you can possibly think of. They say the entries should be between 50 and 60 words. So if you want to have some fun, drop in and enter the contest. They run one every year.

16. The Story Starter http://thestorystarter.com/

Here is a site that is opposite of the other sites on this list. Where Easy Street Prompts and First 50 ask you to come up with a starter, The Story Starter gives it to you. One click of a button and you have the first sentence of your story. So if you are having trouble getting started on a new piece, give it a try. At very least it’s fun to sit and click the button to see what comes up.

17. Language is a Virus http://languageisavirus.com/

Language is a Virus is a site that takes a bunch of writing exercises and puts them all in computer generated scripts. They have exquisite corps, prompts generators, story scramblers, and on and on. They have a ton on the site, check them out.

18. Ink Provoking http://www.inkprovoking.com/

Ink Provoking is a site that gives one writing exercise per day. They usually ask you to write a short story under 1000 words that uses certain words like “bird, apple, space…” etc. It’s a fun site if you give it a try.

19. Creative Writing Prompts http://www.creativewritingprompts.com/

The site is exactly what it says. It is right to the point too. They have 100s of prompts that you can get to very quickly.

20. The Story Kitchen http://www.brucevanpatter.com/storykitchen.html

The Story Kitchen is a fun site to play with. It isn’t as inspirational as some of the other sites, but it’s still fun. It gives you four columns to pick from, and after you select something from each, you click the button and boom you have a story based on your choices.

21. Fuel Your Writing (Maybe defunct)

This site is like a CNN of creativity for writers. You can send your work in or just read, but there are a ton of very interesting and fun stories here. They also have poetry and short stories.
