Sarah gave Jennifer everything on her list, an Easy-Bake oven, a rocking horse she rode like a bucking bronco, a doll that drank water and soiled small diapers. Looking into the eyes of her daughter slowly approaching the tree on Christmas morning, Sarah could see eternity.

    A Christmas Story,

Standing by the fireplace and looking out the window, watching the fresh falling snow.
While Grandmother looks on as the kids hang ornaments on the tree.
Uncle Evans seems to have drunk too much eggnog. You know what I mean.
Let’s gather around to carve the turkey.

Christmas swung like a pendulum. Decorations appeared in neighbors’ yards and in stores. Our excitement got us into trouble. “Christmas is canceled,” my father would yell angrily. Most years, it came anyway. The lights on the Christmas tree are never so beautiful as when they are blurred by tears.

    The Birds’ Christmas Tree

A small pine tree was sacrificed and draped in garlands of vibrant cranberries and snowy popcorn. Pinecones smeared with peanut butter and rolled in birdseed were tied to its branches. Peanuts hung by threads like tinsel. Flocks of ornaments fluttered in to grace the tree.

    Christmas Wish

Cheering begin to crescendo, incandescent light’s flickering, excitement engulfed the surroundings. What an amazing Christmas eve. However, deep inside, I’m yearning for you! Once a joyous night, now melancholy for you’re gone. Yet staring beneath the blue moon, I know we’ll be together again celebrating this spectacular occasion. Soon.

On Thanksgiving, Chloe told Uncle Jim the government didn’t hide a tracking device in her vaccine.
He said, “I know. It’s Bill Gates.”
Chloe said, “But they already track us through cell phones.”
Windows shattered and light flooded the room.
Jim said, “my spaceship’s waiting. We will conquer your species.”

    “Where is it?”
    “In the trunk.”
    “Of the car?”
    “Yes.”
“Goddammit. Ok,” he said, “I’ll go get it.”
Walking timidly across the snow-covered sidewalk, he became aware of how quiet it was, when, above him, just out of sight behind the rows of houses, he heard sleigh bells clatter.

We went to our den and there was St. Nick. “Santa, Hello, Happy Holidays. Did you know this is a Jewish house?”.
“Of course- Google Maps knows everything. We are Universalistic now.
Happy Chanukah, Chanukah Sameach and Happy Holidays to all and to all a good night. “

    Christmas Morning *

It’s Christmas morning the presents are unwrapped. The family has gathered together. This is a time to celebrate that we are able to come together. We are missing the matriarch of the family. She loved this time of year.
Today, she celebrates in heaven with the rest of her family

I wanted to get into the holiday spirit. It’s the least I could do to feel better.

My old traditions didn’t work for me. I couldn’t leave my issues behind.

Apparently, I was after the wrong spirits. Vodka, whiskey, rum-

These are the spirits that’ll see me through the season.

    The Star

Bree reached to put the star at the top of the tree.
The only family heirloom she had, it didn’t have the dazzle of baubles or the glitter of tinsel.
In her, the pale gold reflected the faces of six generations of women. It was the most valuable ornament.

A Regular Holiday Diner Concert: Come One, Come All

Bells jingle as bodies draped of plaid and soot settle. A crew of regulars. Boots stomp. Hey’s, hi’s, and hi-fives rival the Nutcrackers’ march. Fairy dust sprinkles of daffodil yellow, cotton candy pink, and boysenberry waltz. Cookie sheets sizzle. Tomato and chicken soup cans clink on cast iron. Encore, please.
