5 Reasons to get a Degree in English Language and Literature

 

English Language and Literature courses have always proved to be extremely popular and are offered as undergraduate programs by most universities. Here are some of the ways that this type of degree can be utilized after graduating.

  1. Critical Thinking

This type of degree teaches critical thinking, which is a very valuable skill. People who prove that they are able to think for themselves and find the solutions to problems without being guided are considered to be very useful to a wide range of different types of companies.

  1. Communication Skills

Studying English Literature at degree level requires a lot of discussion, listening and questioning. This means that graduates are usually great communicators. As English is the most widely used language for business communication throughout the world, this is a great asset.

  1. Research Skills

A degree in English Language and Literature teaches students thorough research skills. In order to write essays students often need to research a wide range of different types of information and source their work in a correct way. Various types of companies are always on the lookout for people who have good research skills combined with communication and critical thinking skills, as well as the ability to express the information they find clearly.

  1. TEFL Teaching

People who are interested in teaching English as a foreign language are more likely to be accepted by schools if they have a degree in the field. Although this type of degree does not usually feature actual teaching, most schools are willing to teach applicants the basics if they already have strong grammar and communication skills.

  1. Freelance Writing Jobs

In recent years a large number of online companies have started outsourcing article writing work to freelancers. This can be a great way to earn a little extra money, especially when you have just graduated from university. Good writing skills are essential for this type of work, which puts those with an English degree in a good position.

People who have a degree in English Language and Literature will be able to write concisely and comprehensively. This is a valuable skill that will be useful when it comes to finding a job after graduating. If you who have this type of degree you will be able to write resumes and application letters in a compelling way and are likely to go to the front of the queue.
