we’ve finally managed to get it put together. Our goal is to create a low-barrier opportunity for writers and visual artists to get their work seen, so we’ll never charge submission fees and we’ll always read blind. We’ll offer at least token payment for as long as we’re able to scrape together the funds to do so. We plan to give each of our contributors more than just a page or two in our journal. We’ll promote their work on social media and encourage them to keep us updated on new publications so we can share those too. In addition to the basics, each contributor to our April, August, and December issues will be given dedicated feature interviews on our blog, to be released in the weeks before the issue’s publication.
Submissions
Pictura Journal will appear online in two formats: full pdf issues published in April, August, and December, and monthly smaller features as submission volume allows. Our goal is to release a print anthology every other year with content pulled from all published work. We’re looking for work that offers a vivid snapshot of the writer’s world — we want to see cracks in the plaster, last night’s empties on the coffee table, the shivering birch just outside the kitchen window. We want to see the mundane rendered with clarity & quiet moments given room to breathe. We’re open for submissions of poetry (up to five poems, no line limit), prose (one or two pieces of short fiction and creative nonfiction up to 1,500 words), and most types of visual art. We can only accept work in English and will reject without acknowledgement any work that that could reasonably be deemed offensive, including work containing graphic violence or abusive behavior, or themes and language expressing hatred for any marginalized identity.
