The Start Literary Journal

    The Start Literary Journal

    Website

    https://thestartliteraryjournal.com/

    From the Editor

The Start Literary Journal is a new young adult literary journal that is looking for submissions for its first issue. While we hope to publish writers at all stages of their publishing journey, our goal is to give writers their start by publishing new and unpublished writers (including high school students!) and offer challenges to help writers find inspiration. Our mission is to provide an interactive experience where our readers have opportunities to take part in the submission process, vote on their favorite pieces, and help create challenges for our writers.

Our focus is young adult creative writing of various genres. We publish photography, poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. We strive to read and respond to every piece, give readers an immersive experience, and hope this is the start of something much larger for our contributors!

Each issue, we have five challenges: an inspired, fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and photography. For challenges, the top two to three submissions will be posted, and readers will vote for their favorite to become published. For the first issue, our challenges are: Inspired (Photo) Challenge—Silhouette; Fiction Challenge—Not From This World; Creative Nonfiction Challenge—The Moment (that changed everything); Poetry—Fighting Your Demons; Photography—Haunted Places. With these challenges, we hope to give writers inspiration and offer unique stories for our readers to evaluate!

Challenges not your cup of tea? We also have general genre submissions for each genre that are read by our editors for normal publication. For our first issue, which will be out on Halloween, our theme is Alone at Night!

In addition to both submission types, we also offer a high school student submission. For this submission type, high school students can submit a piece and will only be up against other high school students. This means that for each issue, we will publish at least one high school student submission!

We are currently still open for submissions and need submissions for our first issue!

    Submissions

Our focus is young adult creative writing of various genres. We publish photography, poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. We accept fiction up to 2,500 words, and up to two poems or photos per submission. While we accept writing from all authors, we encourage new, young, and / or unpublished writers to submit their work to us. We hope to give new writers their start!
