A Chorus of Shaving by Michael Honda

?A Chorus of Shaving

?by Michael Honda

The steam rises up against the walled mirror. My three day beard, but a patch of color reflected off my foggy self. I enjoy staring this way. It helps to blur your imperfections?if only for a bit. I illuminate the red button of my portable radio. It sings of slight percussion and a hum of toned vocals. From the side of my counter, I see the badger brush prickle its bristles. A soft yawn followed by an invigorated shake as the water bathes it whole.

?I settle the brush down and pop the cover of an organic shaving cream picked up some months ago. The blend of coconut oil, eucalyptus breath, and the smoothing effects of aloe, brings comfort to my skin. With a dab of two fingers, I swoop up the barber?s cream and paste it inside a small rice bowl. Spin and scoop, spin and spin. How the brush and cream work with the chemistry of organic ingredients and water.

?The result, like a harmonious mix of oil and wine, I paint across my face. I slash the blurred mirror with the palm of my hand. I faintly smile as an imagination of a white beard comes to memory. My grandfather, my shaving teacher. If only he could hand me my German engineered, double edged razor. I smile strongly. Pick up the metal shaft and decisively strike my beard. In calculated segments, a rhythm I have come to love. I slowly wipe away the debris. Splash some witch hazel for extra control and finally open the bathroom door. The remaining mist escapes away: calling to the wind, my shaving supplies, my memories.
