Searching the Library

by Mikail Akrie

I walked through the tall oak doors, entering the dark library. I stopped at the front desk, and knocked on the surface, vainly hoping that someone would be there to hear me. Of course, no one appeared. I hadn’t seen anyone in this place.

Dust particles floated through the dense air of the dark room lined with shelf after shelf of old books. The library smelled overwhelmingly of old pages. The sun had gone down by this time, and there were only a few hanging lights at distant intervals in the large dimly lit room.

I wandered through the dark shelves, my eyes scanning the titles, searching for a book that could be useful; one that stood out among the rest of them. I came upon an empty space for a large volume on the shelf. I examined it, then decided to look for it at the front desk, where there should have been a librarian waiting.

As I approached the desk, all at once, the lights started to flicker, and go out. I heard the sound of a woman’s voice wailing in the distance, then I saw a shadow at the far end of the room. . . I wasn’t alone anymore.
