WitchWorks (Not publishing)

    From the Editor

WitchWorks is a pulp horror magazine fashioned after the style of pulp magazines and horror comics that were popular during the 1940s and 1950s. We don’t specialize in high class literary horror and don’t strive to. Our focus is on entertaining and macabre tales with a twist. We are always looking for pulp style stories and art that capture the gritty atmosphere and dark humor of the golden era of fiction and comics.

WitchWorks is a print-on-demand magazine. We cater to a specific niche audience and want to do the best to please them. The print-on-demand style allows us to reach more readers and fans of pulp style fiction while keeping production costs at a minimum. We also will have electronic copies of each issue of the magazine through the Amazon Kindle store. In the spirit of true pulp fiction style the Kindle version of the magazine will only cost 99 cents per issue.

    Submissions

We are looking for horror stories that build through suspense and shock. Stories involving grotesque monsters, bloodsucking vampires, vengeful corpses, ancient curses, maniacal madmen, scenes of torture, mad doctors, haunted houses, and more are okay. In fact, these elements are strongly encouraged. Pulp horror magazines from days past were loaded with these elements. However, a story shouldn’t rely on these elements alone. The characters–especially the main character–should be engaging and believable (but they don’t have to be likable!).

If vampires, zombies, or werewolves are included in a story we ask that they be represented in a classical style and not in the romanticized manner that modern media often portrays them. Specifically with zombies, do not make them brainless shamblers. Zombies from classical pulp horror are resurrected through curses, voodoo, or just good old fashioned revenge from beyond the grave. Additionally, we ask that there be no scenes of graphic rape or blatant sexual torture. We want to scare our readers, not make them throw up.

Horror stories with a twist ending in the vein of The Twilight Zone are strongly encouraged. However, the twist has to make sense in the context of the story and shouldn’t just be tacked on to the end of the story. Elements of classic noir and investigation are also encouraged but not required. Additionally, it is always satisfying when rotten characters get their “just deserts” in the most appropriate way possible.

    Upcoming

Our very first issue is preparing for publication in February of 2015. We are in need of some really good stories and art to hit this first issue out of the park. The first issue will be free via kindle to help promote interest in the magazine.
