    From the Editor

Cleave is a Janus verb, meaning both to stick tight and to fall away. A cleaver is the most broad-edged and brutally efficient kitchen knife, designed to be swung like a hammer for the most effective channel of force. Cleaver Magazine was established in 2013 by Karen Rile and Lauren Rile Smith, to share cutting-edge art and literary work from a mix of established and emerging voices. Cleaver publishes poetry, short stories, essays, dramatic monologues, flash prose (300 words or less), and visual art. We are a quarterly journal. Look for issues in March, June, September, and December.

    From the site:
Cleaver is a Philadelphia-based online magazine that provides a platform for writers and artists producing work of the highest quality.
    Cleaver exists to:

elevate emerging voices, including young adults, alongside established writers.
showcase Philadelphia literary voices among national and international literary artists.
develop the editorial skills of young writers through our selective internship program.
present balanced, insightful book reviews promoting work published by small presses as well as often-overlooked works in translation.
represent the fullest diversity of literary art for all genres and content, advancing emerging contemporary literary forms.

    Submissions

Literary fiction, essays (“creative nonfiction”, personal essays, and memoir), flash, poetry, dramatic writing (monologues, spoken word, preferably with access to high-quality video performances), art (we are interested in art with text– e.g., an essay by the artist or an interview.) For examples, see our issues currently online.

We review submissions only through our Submittable portal. We are not able to consider work sent to us through postal mail or email. We are happy to read simultaneous submissions, with immediate notification if work is accepted elsewhere. Previously published work is not considered, although we will sometimes consider work previously shared on personal blogs. Translations are welcome with permission of original author, or for works in the common domain.

See their submission guidelines before you submit your work: https://www.cleavermagazine.com/contact/submissions/
