Kathai Literary Journal

Posted on January 15, 2023 by Every Writer

    Kathai Literary Journal

    Website

    https://kathaipublicity.wixsite.com/kathai

    From the Editor

The Kathai Literary Journal was started by Sanjana Senthil in 2022. It aims to curate art and writing from all young creators. Kathai is unique in that it is a literary journal, but is also an instagram account where the editor (Sanjana Senthil), shares advanced reader book reviews, creates reels, and shares book recommendations. But, this also means that we get to share other publication opportunities, such as writing contests and competitions. Currently, the website is updated with all of the running contests, competitions, and of course, the submission box for the literary journal. The recent publication was highly successful and we see three ways that submitting helps you! One: you get more exposure. Kathai promotes on instagram as well as in person, which means your work is likely to reach a larger market than your eyes at midnight (we all know how trustworthy our own brains are when they are critiquing). Two: frankly, it’s a great application boost! Submitting and receiving publication (and even recurrent publication) can help showcase your own incentive and willingness to work hard. Three: it makes us happy to read new work, and can help you build relationships with outside groups. We aim to make the process as inclusive and streamlined for new creators, but we also like to open up opportunities to everyone! The journal publishes seasonally, and past publications have included photoshop artwork, book photography, fiction works, flash fiction, short stories, poetry, and even cinematography. It is a student-powered platform that ultimately hopes to open up the world of publishing and showcasing talented young artists/writers to the world. This would start with more publications, and progress into new countries and students. We primarily publish high school/college writers and artists, but are open to other groups as long as the artist is new or has not been published more than 5 times. Additionally, the journal does much of its promotion through instagram and online promotion, and is not a print journal yet (although we hope to be in print in the next year!). This would also mean that published/accepted works will be shared in instagram posts and stories, in the journal, and on the website. We hope you choose to submit! And don’t worry, we’ll read/view it with friendly eyes—putting yourself out there is hard, but so rewarding. Take a leap and submit to the journal!

    Submissions

Kathai’s mission is to be as well-rounded as possible in terms of what it publishes. This is why we accept almost any form of artwork. Primarily, we look for short stories, flash fiction, photography, cinematography, poetry, and more. However, for our seasonal publications, we do provide a prompt. The prompts are centered around feelings and, we hate to say it, but the vibe (does that word make anyone else cringe a little?) of a season or a state of being. For example, our fall publication had the prompt of “create with a fall feeling or setting”. So, submissions are quite open in terms of what we accept. Additionally, we also look for general submissions that will be published on our website. Again, this is done to open up the field to as many people as possible with as many different kinds of work as possible! For the website, we take book reviews, short stories, flash fiction, essays, short memoirs, photography, cinematography, etc. If you create something, chances are you can submit it to us! We take any kind of fiction, but do tend to shy away from fantasy, erotica, or anything too explicit (if the work is not accepted on these grounds, you will be notified in the email so you are not left in the dark about why.) Word counts and any other guidelines are specified for the specific competition, contest, or submission period. With that, we hope to see your name and work in a journal, and on our website! If you like to create, submit it to us!

    Upcoming

Currently, we are running a 100 Word Winter Writing Contest! Guidelines are specified on our website, and on our instagram @kathai.official. The submission box for general works for publication on the website is always open, and you can expect a response time of about 3 weeks to a month. Submit to us! The submission box for our current literary journal is not open, but the edition for winter will open on January 6th. Hope you find something you can submit to, and do not hesitate to reach out to us at kathai.publicity@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or concerns.
