    About the Magazine:

Edited by Carol Edgarian and Tom Jenks two well-established editors, the publication is making a real run at being a “big time” literary magazine on the web. Not many publications in print or online have been able to be successful AND keep creative content as their bread and butter. Narrative is attempting to do just that. They are working week after week to bring great writing to the web and to promote writers–many new and emerging ones as well as established authors. It’s like the Atlantic Monthly depending on fiction and poetry first and articles second. Narrative’s readership in 2013 reached 160,000, and with that kind of circulation the magazine is able to carry literary writing to the mainstream. They are doing something amazing and worthwhile for writers and every writer on the web should support them.

Here you have former editors and writers who have worked for or published in publications, such as Esquire, GQ, and Vogue, and who are trying to bring great writing on the web like never before. The site states, “Narrative was founded in 2003 with the idea of exploring what could be done with quality literary publishing on the Internet. At that time nothing existed online that could stand alongside well-established literary periodicals, but it was clear that unless writers moved onto the Internet they would soon be marginalized.”

    From EWR:

We list Narrative Magazine as a first tier magazine. The publication started publishing in 2003 and has published outstanding work by authors. Narrative is setting a standard for literary magazines both on the internet and in print. We highly recommend that you read this publication.

They do it right, and they are working very hard to promote writing as a mainstay of the web. Read them, subscribe and visit often. They are number 1 on our list for both their content and their vision. They could, if they were in print, be at the top of our print magazine list as well.

    Submission Type

Narrative publishes fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, including stories, novels, novel excerpts, novellas, personal essays, humor, sketches, memoirs, literary biographies, commentary, reportage, interviews, and features of interest to readers who take pleasure in storytelling and imaginative prose. They are looking for high quality submissions, and they do accept submissions from new and emerging authors.

    From the site:

WE WELCOME SUBMISSIONS of original, previously unpublished manuscripts of all lengths, ranging from short short stories to complete book-length works for serialization. Narrative regularly publishes fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, including stories, novels, novel excerpts, novellas, personal essays, humor, sketches, memoirs, literary biographies, commentary

See their submissions page before you submit your work: https://www.narrativemagazine.com/submit-your-work

Tell us about upcoming events or contests

Narrative regularly host contests. Currently their Fall 2013 Story Contest is open for submissions. They are seeking: “OUR FALL CONTEST is open to all fiction and nonfiction writers. We’re looking for short shorts, short stories, essays, memoirs, photo essays, graphic stories, all forms of literary nonfiction, and excerpts from longer works of both fiction and nonfiction.” You can view their contest guidelines here: Deadline: Novemember 30, 2013. The N30B (Narrative Thirty Below) contest is now open and runs until November 3rd, and our Winter Contest will open January 1st and closes March 31st.
