$500 Halloween 50 Horror Word Story Contest 2019

Welcome to our 2019 $500 Halloween Horror 50 Word Story Contest. Yes, that’s right. It’s already here. Every year we run our contests, and those of you who have been frequent readers, this is what you’ve been waiting for.

First we will be doing a print issue! We will be doing 2 print issues, and we will pick entries from this contest to be in our issue. If you had a 50 word story designated to be in our print issue, from a past contest, please contact us.

Second, we will be giving out a $500 reward for the best 50 word horror story. This is not easy for us. Every Writer is not doing as well as it did in the past, but we want your stories. I believe writers should get paid for their work. I wish we could pay all of our writers, but it’s just impossible. So $500 for 50 words, I think is a unique and valuable statement to our readers. Ten dollars a word is what all writers really deserve.

So here are the rules:

• Story must be scary
• Story must be 50 words
• Story must be original and your own
• Story may not be published elsewhere
• Story must have a title (does NOT count in word count)
• Deadline is October 25, 2019
• Enter as many times as you want
• Story must be written in the comments below!
• Be nice or be disqualified

I love these stories. This is one of favorite traditions of Every Writer. I look forward to this every year, and this year I have extended the time we are going to spend with the contest.

The winners will:

• Be announced on October 31, 2019
• Will get $500
• Will be published in our digital and print issue.
• Will get an author page on our site

There is no entry fee for this contest. It would help us out greatly if you would donate 1$ or more, if you can, to help out the site. We would really appreciate it. A donation will not be considered in the deciding this contest.

Thank you!

If you want to keep up with me on Twitter, please follow me at @everywriter, I follow back all writers.

Good luck, and let the writing begin.

HERE IS THE WINNER

I have picked 4 stories. They all have times and days on them. If the winner does not respond by Friday 11/22/19 the money will go to the next story on the list. Here are the top 4 stories in order. ONLY OUR 1st PLACE WINNER gets the $500. Also, so this insanity never happens again, the winner will be invited back next year to be one of the judges.

WINNER 1st Place:

Kit Steward 10/13/19 5:20 pm
THE MIDNIGHT INCUBATOR
She heard mushy sounds for days and suffered from unbearable itchiness.
A doctor’s visit revealed earwig pupae nesting in her ear canal, it was flushed out.
Later, weary from stress, she crawled into bed.
That night while she slept, the creature returned.
And finding the eggs missing, it laid more.

2nd Place:

Elizabeth Lee 09/24/19 4:36 pm

Secondhand Doll

She didn’t want a secondhand doll so she flung it across the room. Porcelain cracked against the wall. Her mom made her glue the pieces back together. A thin shard sliced her hand, baptizing the doll in her hateful blood. The secondhand doll decided she didn’t want an ungrateful child.

3rd Place:

Alexander Daley Escobedo 10/25/19 3:38pm

Heirloom

We Buried my brother today. Suicide. He thought something evil was haunting him. He’d been medicated, institutionalized, shocked and secluded. He found his own way out. I wish I could tell him I’m sorry. Or had listened more closely. Because, when I got home, it was on my couch. Laughing.

4th place:

JB 10/25/19 8:12pm

TITLE: RESEVOIR

We should have known something was wrong when we first tasted the water. It was a little brown, but no more than usual in this apartment complex.

We kept drinking it until it turned black.

When they opened the water tank, they found the bloated, rotting corpse of my neighbor.

We usually always contact the winners first, but after all the trouble, we are opening up the process. I am again, very sorry for how late this is. I did not expect 4000 stories. Next year I will be ready.

After a family member’s phone number was posted in this thread, I have set comments to be held for moderation. If you post a comment, I will see it, but it will not appear until approved. Enough is enough. I will send the money to the winners. At this time, if you want to contact me, email. I have reported what I consider a threat to the authorities.

IN THE MIDDLE OF A BREAKDOWN

    He was there..
he decided he couldn’t go on.
    …Gun in mouth
    Path already decided..
    He pulled the trigger..
    In the nanosecond between here
    and gone
    she appeared..
His emissary.. conduit for the soul.. And, to save him from eternal damnation..
she cut him from his ankles, and apart from his neck.

    LEAF PEEPERS

Often he’d come to the lakeside bench to bask in the Fall’s vibrant colors.

He sat alone, the season was nearly over; he enjoyed the rustle of leaves one last time.

The cancer had taken its toll.

Resting glass eyeballs on the wooden seat, he waded blindly into the depths.

    The ITSY BITSY SPIDER

    Spiders terrified her since childhood..
Now that they were big as cars only made her phobia a reality based one.
“Dr. Heiss! Where can we hide?” his laboratory?.. a warzone
    “ In that corner, go!”
“They won’t find us there! ”
She paused, as the hairy leg, long as a street sign, told her slightly different.

    LOVERS IN A DANGEROUS TIME
They lived in the Seren-ghetto. . Home of predators and crack bums.. “How much an hour?”
“Holla at me young pimpin’” weren’t uncommon nearby lingo..
She’d been performing rites …unbeknownst to him.
The caller at the door smelled of sulfur..
This next transaction would cost them more than they could possibly afford.

    WOLF CLAN UNITE!
They under dug our skulls, to build their new pipelines..
Their greed, and need,..overwhelmed their self-respect..
From the underworld, the Chieftain cried “ooOowWaAYaAhhH!!..
    And
From the chant of a thousand ghost soldiers, a returned chant of ”OOHYAAHOE!”
they would grow to regret disrespecting our burial grounds

    THE WILD WILD WEST
the odds were 6 to one..
    A standoff
    Gunfire rang out
When the dust settled, only the gunslinger remained.. These evildoers would never threaten these good people again..
His pride quickly broken by the evil pistol’s hiss…. ”no matter what good deeds, in the end, your soul still is mine“

    REALITY

Their hands are groping my body, touching me everywhere. They are violating me in every way, taking away my innocence, my purity. I’m screaming and struggling and crying.
“I want to wake up!”, I sob.
“You can’t escape the reality”, he whispers back.
    …………
“I’m sorry, the coma has claimed her.”

    TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES

“I have missed you terribly wife”
    ..”where were you? ”
    He?
A simple Hasidic man.. A tzibbur..
Rain dripped off her, underneath her burial shrouds..
    Brought to life how?
    Unknown
“Come.. Lay … You must be freezing ”
She slid coldly underneath the covers, next to him.. And he?
    ..could be no happier.

THEY GOT THE FUTURE THAT THEY DESERVED
    He saw what was coming…
    it was terrifying
He’d of torn his eyeballs out, but it wouldn’t have helped.. His insights lived in his mind’s Eye
He’d of warned them, but Guantanamo’s tortures had rendered him a mute paraplegic.
As the ballistics finally impacted, he fried.. crying tears of release.

    Run

Something stirs under the watery moonlight, dull against the darkening sky line. I was called to investigate. Light in hand, gun at side, I moved through the eerie night. There stood a shadow against the midnight mist. I told him to run. And he ran… but he ran towards me.

    KENT STATE:REMIXED & RETROFITTED
    The students stood, undaunted.
The police..ready to squelch protest. with bullets and attack dogs
    But
    amongst the crowd..
There were whose eyes had the second sight..
They could see the snarling demons hidden beneath their veneer of normalcy…
    Their enemy couldn’t see them
    But
    They knew they were there.

    ‘Game point!’

    Red’s team vs Kathy’s…
    Victory was decided next shot.
    Everyone tensed
    “Kathy!”
    “What Red?.. No mercy here!”
They were bitter high school rivals
    “heehh”
“ That’s exactly what I thought whilst killing your stupid bunny rabbit!”..
    “ wha-what?”.
    …”Mr. Biddlesworth?”
    Bam
Red’s team wins, while Kathy crumpled into the sand, weeping inconsolably.

    “Marriage recalled?”
    “Divorce reinstalled?”
This jingle wasn’t exactly pithy.. so far, Harold thought
“Need to release your anger ?”
    “Get revenge?”
“Come down to Ole Joe’s Kill shack!”
“Take retribution on ANY varmint walking, without fear of prosecution or jurisdictions “

    PURSUIT

It chases you in your dreams every time you sleep. In the dark open woodland, with no source of light. It’s relentless! Fortunately, you always woke up before It caught you. But this time you took a pill. A headache? And now It’s here and you have nowhere to go.

    THE HUNTER BECOMES THE HUNTED

I watched him as he hunted his preys. Learned as he violated them, abused them, and then killed them. Mercilessly. One after another. I collected their souls and waited, waited for when it was his turn.
He was the Serial Killer, I the Grim Reaper.
    And now, it was time!

Relishing the abundance of monster molds on eBay, he went on a buying frenzy, purchasing only the grossest and most vile designs available.

A life’s work spent creating a sentient polymer had finally paid off; the motive for its development would soon be realized.

    CREMATION

I’m dead, but only physically. I’m still alive inside; my soul is alive, trapped in this useless body!
They’re coming to light me up in my coffin. To cremate me.
    “I’m burning!”
The heat, smoke; choking, stifling. I can’t move, can’t fight it!
    “I want to wake up!”
    I don’t.

She sat in silence, listening to her boyfriend speak. His sharp words stabbing her heart like a dagger Each word he said, he carved into her skin. “You’re useless. You deserve to die.” The words appeared in red on her skin, draining not only her blood, but also her life.

    THE FERAL SHADOW

Curious almond eyes paused around the corner, staring at the sitting man.

He looked down at the black ball, comprehending a trespass, he left.

Immediately, the beast leaped on the bench.

He paused and inched rearward to pet the creature.

Eyes looked up, and a hand passed through thin air.

    It disgusted his wife.

One had to excuse the poor beast, old habits die hard; unfortunately, this carryover from his ghoulish youth lingered long.

“What’s the harm in another tiny slice?” he asked, munching.

The creature savored it, for him a floppy, blood-soaked, skin graft was his most favorite treat.

You rarely see yourself from behind, in life. Nor blood seeping into your motionless body. Faint breaths as my roommate backs into the room. First admiring her brutal artwork, her knife heals each gaping wound. My fingers find their rightful sockets like magnets. Settle in; death is life on rewind.

Jake and his friends strolled through the pumpkins. They should’ve come before it was dark out, but Halloween was tomorrow so they had no time. He heard a scream from behind him, his friends were gone. Suddenly an arm from the darkness grabbed him, and pulled him into the black.

        SPACE IS NOT THE PLACE
Collins was lost days ago.. With only 3 hours air, not 3 days
        Space exploration tragedies ..
We, NASA, all mourned… then continued
So how is something that looks like Collins is banging on the airlock?

        Something that’s wearing her skin
        And
        Worst of all..
Why can’t we see its face?

I startled awake, feeling a prescience sitting behind me. A shiver ran down my spine as I felt a gust of warm breathe trickle through the hairs on my neck. I turn my head in every other direction, terrified to see what was behind me. Nothing. I let my feet touch my cold carpet less floor, one toe grazing the wood at a time, terrified of what could be lurking underneath my bed. I feel a finger grip my ankle, I pull my foot away. Stuck, in my own bed, trapped in a nightmare. I hear a terrifying growl and lose my breath trying to scream. No noise exits my lips. Hopeless, my stomach churns. Then, my eyes begin to open, my younger brother standing over me laughing at my humility. Another day, another prank.

You’re sitting there reading these words, wondering where this story will take you. It’s supposed to be a scary story and you like those. The adrenaline rush is fun. Exciting. But as you read, something dawns on you. These words are merely a distraction from what’s coming up behind you.

      SOMETIMES DRASTIC MEASURES ARE REQUIRED

” Little known fact ..” the professor offered “..current Edinburgh is built upon an earlier version .. “during the plague, infected homes were moored up, citizens buried alive in them.. ”
screaming from outside suddenly cut him off, as students gasped from seeing hundreds of the dead, shambling and rising up out the ground.

    “Halloween night”
Just to clarify before the story begins. When I say “it” I don’t mean the funny looking weird clown from the movie. I mean something DIFFERENT. I will explain later on.

There they were. Standing at the street. It gave chills to their spines. they were confused why, But they decided to continue down the street. They saw a huuuuge house, decided to walk towards it. they saw shadows in the window but need not question knowing “It” was there. hiding.

    SAILING ON THE BLACK PEARL

Terror rose up to fill his throat, choking him.. The end of days.. Hell itself arising.. The earth a black pearl, permanently shut from God’s mercy.. The four eyed obsidian worm thing, wearing the semblance of a coworker slid next to his ear and whispered ..‘ I knew you’d be here’

I received a phone call from my father out of the blue today. It was nice to catch up. It’s seemed like ages since we last talked. Not much has changed with either of us. I’m still locked up in this psych ward and he’s still buried in the woods.

    A SOFTER RAIN FALLS
    (a 50 word horror story)

    Cars burned
    Alarms rang, unanswered
.. Soft rains came and went… nobody noticed
Freeways clear… the earth as silent as a mute
    The Sleeping disease had struck
Everywhere, everyone that he encountered lay prone, unresponsive
    Sound?
    Pain?
    Fire?
    No stimuli woke anyone
He… insomniac on a slumbering planet
    It was nightmare.

      Title: The Picture

I was walking down my neighborhood, when I saw this gorgeous tree in someone’s house. I decided to take a picture of front of it. When I got home, I looked at the picture. There was a person behind me with a bloodied knife in their hand.

    Texts

All day long, I’ve been getting these strange text messages. They seem to be listing intersections. Curious, I looked up them up and realized the intersections were drawing closer and closer to my home. When the last text came through, I nearly dropped the phone. It was my street address.

    Drugged

    They were hivemind
    Buzzing

    Are you scared?

    BREATH OF FRESH WATER

I’ve always known I’m going to die by drowning.

Whenever it rains, I see her face in every puddle.

Someday soon, I know, she’ll rise up out of the river. Silt-blackened teeth chattering, blue-gray skin waterlogged and warped, wrapped in weeds and green garbage bags, she’ll pull me down, down.

        DESPITE ALL MY RAGE

I found myself caught in my own reflection
        The mirror has beguiled…
        Entrapped me
I am stuck within my eyes reflection
Every move — a wrong one

        Faulty
        The snare..
I am a fly, stuck in reflective flypaper
I flee out of the bathroom.. screaming
        But
        Not aLL of me escapes

    ~..I, Me, Myself..~

I’m standing downstairs, looking equally puzzled as I’m here upstairs.

“How can I be there? I’m here!” I bet the other me thinks the same.
    “You’re fake!!!”
Shouting, I engage into a mortal fight with myself.

“Jenna, is it you?” Mum asked.
    -Yes Mum……It’s…me!
    My voice trembled slightly.

    Sweetheart

It’s Halloween…. and I have something exciting planned for Cindy. We’ve been dating for a year and tonight, I’m going to show her how much I love her. The special syrup is ready for its final ingredient…..who just walked in! “Cindy, my love! May I have your heart as promised!!!”

    “Til Death Do Us Part”

Here comes the bride, as she saunters down the aisle.

This is her big day. Mother would be so proud.

Her face is glowing. You wouldn’t know that she has a devilish secret.

Tucked inside her bouquet is a shiny axe.

The groom has no clue what’s coming to him.

    The Package

I haven’t seen my wife in a few days. She has been away on business. Today, a package arrived addressed from her. Not knowing what to expect, I tore it open. The lifeless eyes of my secretary stared up at me. A note pinned to her head read “You’re Next.”

    Psycho

    What? . . . No, I can’t. I’m tired already. . . You’ll give me sweet treats? . . . Yippee! . . . You want me to use the sledgehammer? . . . Shouldn’t I use the gun instead? It’s quick and easy. . . Alright then, I’ll use the sledgehammer. . . So who is it this time? . . . He’s here? . . . And he’s reading this?

    Found him!

    Is this the future?

October is here: if only i remember the feeling of being scared of something else than the thought of how many days I have left on this fucked up planet. They called it spooky season but now we call it one more month to survive. Why didn’t they do anything?

    Monsters

They’re coming. Can you hear them? We have to stay quiet or they’ll find us. No, please don’t scream, I won’t hurt you. I know I might look monstrous but you’ll see the truth. The real monsters are coming and then we’ll both die. The humans are coming for us.

    Halloween

It’s my favorite time of year. Ghosts and goblins. Witches and devils. Zombies and monsters. The fake spooks and the scary movies are fun. Even the Halloween parties are fun. But I am much more partial to all of the trick or treaters. The oh so tasty trick or treaters.

      LOVER

“I missed you, love” she said
      looking at me
      “me too” I said
      “then let’s be together forever”
      She flashed a crooked grin
And that gave me a shiver cause
      she was already dead……

    The Closet

As a masked man searches my room, I hide inside the closet. My hands tremble as he approaches the closet door. Bursting open, I see him scream in terror. There’s no time for me to react when large, rotten hands grip me from behind and my flesh begins to burn.

    SWINE FLEW

“It’s those feral pigs again,” Mrs. Palmer cursed. “I’m calling the sheriff.”

Her little nephew charged out the door.

“God no,” she shrieked. “Tommy! Come back!”

She rushed after him. But it was already too late.

Tommy had driven off the pigs, but tragically, the garden was a total loss.

    “I WILL SAVE YOU, LOVE!”

-Trust me, Jake! This forest’s spooky!
    “C’mon Arna!
-I swear! They’re no ordinary wolves! They’re werewolves.
“Agree to disagree, whatever they’re, I’ll save you from all.”

I smiled. I knew he will.

“The real question is, Love, who’ll save you from me?”

Moments later, the vampire started sucking my blood.

    The Bone Box

It was cold, dark and damp. I couldn’t see my hand in front of me. I could only hear a zen garden being raked. Slowly. Deliberately. Until finally it stopped. I could only move a few inches in each direction. I couldn’t turn over or sit upright. My bones hurt.

    Ain’t No Sunshine

The sun stopped rising several years ago. Now we live life in darkness. Never knowing what’s around the corner, in the backseat, under the bed or in the closet. Skeletal hands reach out and pull me in. I can’t see anything around me. The hands drop me. It’s still dark.

    After Hours

She worked well past the end of her shift as she tried to get caught up on the workload. When she heard footsteps in the hall, she thought the cleaning crew had come in. But when she felt the hot breath on her neck, she knew there was something wrong.

    The Box

I awoke in a box, unable to move. It was hot and humid. Every breath felt like an inhale of water. Screaming for help, I heard a voice call back to me. Fear surged through my body. “You’ll die in this box” said the voice of my mother.

    Ghost

You can hear it creeping through the woods, it’s breathing in your ear. It’s watching your every move and listening to every sound it overhears. When you get back safe into your home and you can’t hear it anymore. You know it’s still lurking, watching, and waiting at your door.

As I crawled in through the broken window of the abandoned house, something crashed to the floor. I wanted to turn around and run, but I had to show my friend that I was not a coward. As soon as I stepped down from the window, someone grabbed my leg.

    Running From Darkness

I’m running and I can’t see more than 3 feet in front of me. As I round the corner something black and heavy pushes me to the ground. My breathing is rushed. Then it stops completely. Am I dead? I can’t see. Then the heaviness comes back and. . .

    The Intruder

Mr. Jacobs sat in bed waiting for his wife downstairs. He heard a loud bang and a scream he wasn’t sure what it was, so he stayed in bed. Then he heard a thump, thump, thump coming from the stairs, he hid under the covers waiting, then it stopped. BANG!!!

On Hanging a Stocking at Christmas by Charles S. Brooks

On Hanging a Stocking at Christmas (1920)  by Charles S. Brooks As Christmas is, above all, a holiday for children, it is proper in its season to consider with what regard they hold its celebration. But as no one may really know the secrets of childhood except as he retains the recollection of his own, […]
