    From the editor

The Iowa Review is an American literary magazine that publishes fiction, poetry, essays, and reviews. The magazine–currently in its 42nd year–is published in April, August, and December of each year. We look for the best writing available and are often pleased to introduce new writers. We also sponsor The Iowa Review Awards, an annual contest in our three main genres of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.

    Submissions

The Iowa Review publishes short stories, flash fiction, graphic novels, self-contained novel excerpts, and plays; poetry of all kinds, including verse plays and longer work; translations; and all manner of creative nonfiction, including personal essays, lyric essays, memoirs, and literary journalism.? We also publish interviews and short reviews of book-length fiction, poetry, and nonfiction on our website.

Non-contest manuscripts are welcome during the fall semester only: September, October, and November. Unsolicited work that arrives at any other time will not be read. (We also sponsor The Iowa Review Awards, an annual contest for which entries are accepted January 1 through 31.)

    Upcoming

Each January since 2003, The Iowa Review has invited submissions to The Iowa Review Awards, a writing contest in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Winners receive $1,500; first runners-up receive $750. Winners and runners-up are published in each December issue.

This creative writing contest for U.S. military veterans and active duty personnel is hosted by The Iowa Review and made possible by a gift from the family of Jeff Sharlet (1942–69), a Vietnam veteran and antiwar writer and activist. The contest is open to veterans and active duty personnel writing in any genre and about any subject matter.

Prizes: First place: $1,000 plus publication in an issue of The Iowa Review. Second place: $750. Three runners-up: $500 each.

Hello, this is Basser Ahmad Yaad from Afghanistan. I am a Ph.D. student at CIU North Cyprus. I have written a short story on current girls’ education issues in Afghanistan and want to publish it in one of the American literary magazines.
