The Resurrectionist

Posted on January 22, 2012June 26, 2014 by Every Writer
The Resurrectionist is a biannual poetry journal dedicated to modern formalist poetry. By modern we intend poetry that makes use of contemporary language and grammar, experiments with verse forms or that handles contemporary themes. 'Resurrectionist' (syn. 'Resurrection-man') is a 19th century English term for a body-snatcher whose main purpose was the resale of body parts to anatomy schools and researchers in the medical field. The application of the term for the journal is metaphoric and in direct retort to the openly stated assumption that formal verse (or metrical poetry) is a dead and/or no longer relevant art.

Chautauqua (Defunct)

Posted on January 16, 2012April 19, 2023 by Every Writer
The editors actively solicit writing that expresses the values of Chautauqua Institution broadly construed: a sense of inquiry into questions of personal, social, political, spiritual, and aesthetic importance, regardless of genre. We consider the work of any writer, whether or not affiliated with Chautauqua Institution, except for members of the Board of the Chautauqua Writers? Center unless solicited for special issues. The qualities we seek include a mastery of craft, attention to vivid and accurate language, a true lyric ?ear,? an original and compelling vision, and strong narrative instinct. Above all, we value work that is intensely personal, yet somehow implicitly comments on larger public concerns?work that answers every reader?s most urgent question: Why are you telling me this?

971 MENU defunct

Posted on December 12, 2011April 21, 2023 by Every Writer
971 MENU is a purely online not-for-profit venture. We publish whenever we have enough work to justify an issue. That means five pieces. The minimum time between issues is thirty days, and attempts are made to coincide with the first of the month. We publish fiction and nonfiction of any length and sometimes accidentally other stuff. 971 MENU began in September 2006 as a publisher of fiction under 1000 words. We are pleased with our work, and we are quite pleased with the high-quality work we have been fortunate enough to publish, but we no longer limit ourselves in terms of length. However, your chance of seeing a thirty-page epic here is fairly slim. We still put out the short stuff, and some that's a little bit longer.

The Stinging Fly was established in 1997 to seek out, publish and promote the very best new Irish and international writing. The main objective in setting up the magazine was to work towards bringing out a well-designed publication that would provide a forum for the very best new Irish and international writing. Turn your ecocritical eye on any aspect of modern life, see what comes out. Avoid overt, or preachy messages. Enter contests for poetry, fiction, essays, and recipes. Cast new light on rapid species extinction, climate change, food production, technology, sustainability and community. Make us laugh; make us cry. scissors and spackle, a journal of the written world (not publishing)

Posted on November 5, 2011April 29, 2019 by Every Writer
Words in their purist form both cut and repair, sometimes simultaneously. They have been used to create impact and empires, to bring peace in times of war and set battles in motion. Words have not been given the credit they are owed. Scissors and spackle wants to slip back into the power of words and is searching for artists who string them together in ways that make us remember. We are not concerned with what box or title an artist's work fits into, or how many words it takes them to get there. We are only interested in the destination. We are interested in fiction with out boundaries.

The Aurorean has been featured in Poet?s Market and several-times recommended as a ?Pick? by the prestigious Small Press Review, most recently for its 10th Anniversary Issue (Fall/Winter 2010?2011). SPR has said of the Aurorean: ?a journal that has both high production values and quality poetry ... perfect to elevate you from the dark night of the soul.? In January of 2011, NewPages reviewer Sima Rabinowitz said of our 15th Anniversary Issue: "This little journal will fill you up." Our focus is always poetry of New England, and poetry of the seasons (including haiku) although we are open to other subjects as well. In a world full of angst, we publish poetry that uplifts, inspires, and is meditational, but is not religious or denominational, as we are ever mindful of diversity.

Poems should be no more than 20 lines and creative nonfiction no more than 500 words. The editors hope to be surprised by your writing. They place a premium on freshness of language and perspective. They have little patience for the pedantic, dogmatic, or sophomoric. Submissions open Nov. 1, 2011, and continue through Dec. 1 We look forward to reading your work. Really.
