figrotpressFrom the Publisher

Figroot Press is an indie press that publishes four issues a year. We publish visceral, gut-wrenching poetry, poems-in-translation, short prose, art, and photography, and we are always seeking to push the boundaries of convention and tradition. We want the writing and art that makes us feel something. We want the work that makes us pause and look at a tree differently, punch a wall, or that makes us want to curl up and hide for a while.

We feel that writing is the product of community at work — the process of writing and creating creates two selves: the writer & reader, the artist & viewer. The act of creating brings us closer to the larger community. We are exploring life and the human condition in all its forms.

We aim to expand our press to produce chapbooks and longer works as we continue to contribute to the community of creators. This press would not be possible without the love and support of our readers and contributors.

    The Aftermath
    By Andrew M Wells

I`m querying whether you`d consider my work titled The Aftermath, here`s a brief synopsis.
Anthony Wren is on his way home when a mudslide washes over him but who or what is buried in the earth, and who is Jason Messer to Anthony.
My story follows Anthony Wren, a successful author who is innocently making his way back to his vacation home in the Welsh village where he grew up and to his pregnant girlfriend when a landslide washes over him and he finds a missing girl from Cardiff buried in the earth. As the story progresses, we learn of an anonymous man (whose name is Jason Messer, who lives under his father`s name and who talks to himself. By the end of the story, we discover Jason`s motives for the murder of his father (Geoff Messer, who killed the girl in the field) and that he (Jason Messer) suffers from a form of D. I. D. (Dissociative Identity Disorder.) One of his personalities being his father and that he tried luring Anthony and his friends as children.
The entire (Aftermath) story is a prequel to another story called Foreshock (already written) and features a terminally ill cancer patient (Charlie Hutchings) completing his bucket list as his best friend (Joe Treadwell) is murdered by a vindictive ex which is talked about in Aftermath. He struggles to complete his list as his health deteriorates. I`ve also almost completed another story set in the same geographical area which tackles the effects of loneliness and depression.

I really hope these ideas pique your interest as I`ve been thinking and dreaming up stories since I was little and have been published a few times during my adolescence; a poem of mine (Opposite) was featured in an anthology of work called Sparks of Inspiration: A Collection of Creative Writing. As well as a short story and a few other poems in my youth and I have many more ideas in mind. I also received a certificate grading me 81.43% on the Write Fiction online course. I`m currently writing a story where loneliness is the biggest issue and features a woman named Maddie Hanson whose world is turned upside down when she sees a man about to commit suicide and saves him but can`t find him after she falls for him. It also features a small girl who is bullied mercilessly by another girl who she thought was a friend called Cold Skies. I have more ideas for stories that I`d like to write and I hope to hear from you soon as I feel not enough is written about the effects cancer has on people and I intend to address this issue.
    Kind regards,
    Andrew M Wells
