Graywolf Press is an independent non-profit publisher committed to the discovery and promotion of contemporary literature. Since our founding in 1974, we have championed extraordinary poetry, short story collections, novels, memoirs, and essays that represent diverse voices and perspectives from around the world.
Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Graywolf Press seeks to preserve and enhance literature as an essential art form through the publication of both emerging new writers and bestselling, award-winning authors. Our list reflects a commitment to championing underrepresented voices alongside established literary greats.
As a non-profit press, our dual goals are to publish important works that impact the cultural conversation, as well as ensure the sustainability and growth of the press over the long term. We aim to strike a balance between accessibility and unconventional, challenging writing.
Each year we publish approximately 30 new titles spanning poetry, short story collections, novels, essays and select translations. Our books have won numerous prestigious awards, including the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and more. We take pride in discovering vital new writers and being the first to publish now-canonical authors.
At Graywolf, we see ourselves as publisher-activists advocating not just for books but for a thoughtful literary culture. Our team brings passion, dedication and talent to helping authors connect with readers. We are distributed by Farrar, Straus and Giroux and always endeavor to make our books widely available and affordable.
Submissions We accept submissions during limited reading periods which are announced on our website. Works must be submitted by a literary agent. We focus on literary fiction, poetry, short story collections, memoirs and personal essays.
